What is a purity ring and why do so many celebrities wear them?

Its a ring that goes on the left hand on the ring finger symbolizing your vow to not have till your married and once u r married it is replaced by wedding ring or an engagement ring. I think its sometimes blessed by a church but this is what someone told me.
